It’s looking to be a season of Koala-ty music as Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s (SSO) kicks off its 2024/25 season with a highly anticipated Australian collaboration that will see them performing in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in February next year.

But before their eventful Australian debut next year, we’ve picked a few of our favourites from their exciting calendar that we think you should catch in the next three months. With an oeuvre that runs the gamut for every classical music aficionado, there’s something for everyone. From familiar classic canons to more complex arrangements to concerts designed for toddlers, classical and orchestral music have never been more accessible.

1. Beethoven’s Ode to Joy (25 - 26 July)

You’re very likely to have heard Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, which is possibly classical music’s most beloved celebration of the human spirit. Here’s a chance for you to catch it in full symphonic glory at the SSO’s season-opening concert, which will kick things off with Brahms’s Double Concerto featuring Singapore’s violin star Chloe Chua and SSO Principal Cellist Ng Pei-Sian.

Catch SSO’s Beethoven’s Ode to Joy at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $38.

2. National Day Concert (11 August)

A staple in the SSO calendar since 2018 is the annual National Day Concert, which has celebrated the works of our musical forefathers and showcased our composers of today. This concert includes a showcase of the winning pieces of the SSO’s National Day Concert 2024 Call for Compositions.

Catch SSO’s National Day Concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $15.

3. Carmina Burana (22 - 23 August)

This is the blockbuster choral-orchestral spectacular that we’re most looking forward to. A collaboration between the Singapore and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras and Choruses that promises to be a stunning experience comprising fanfares, firebirds and flamenco. Carmina Burana, or “Songs of Beuren” in English, is a collection of over 200 bawdy, satirical and irreverent poems and texts recorded between the 11th and 13th century.

Catch SSO’s Carmina Burana at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $28.

4. Pirates Ahoy! (7 - 8 September)

Sail the high Cs on board the Victoria with the SSO in this swashbuckling adventure presented by Alasdair “Awesome Al” Malloy and conductor Rodolfo Barráez. Perfect for families with young children aged four and above, this concert casts off on the second weekend of September for three shows only.

Catch SSO’s Pirates Ahoy! at the Victoria Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $25.

5. Classics at the Movies (27 - 28 September)

Quite often, it is the music in the movies that moves us. Orchestral music can elevate the cinematic experience and is the ingredient that makes a film epic. Think Popeye the Sailorman, Pride and Prejudice, and you’d have been familiar with the work of Samuel Lerner, Dario Marianelli, and more. There’s no popcorn involved, but you’ll be taken on a journey of unforgettable scores with these celluloid canons.

Catch SSO’s Classics at the Movies at the Victoria Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $28.

6. SSO Babies’ Proms (5 - 6 October)

Get your tiny humans (below the age of 6) started in the world of orchestral music with the popular Babies’ Proms - where everything is free and easy, and you’re ready to get up from your seats and groove along to the music presented by William “Uncle Bill” Ledbetter. Pre-show activities start an hour before each concert - so make a day of it!

Catch SSO’s Babies’ Proms at the Victoria Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $35.
