A year packed with arts and culture events in Singapore to Catch this 2024

It’s only the start of February and we’re already trying to catch our breath! It’s been a blistering start to Singapore’s arts and culture calendar, with Singapore Art Week (SAW) 2024 having just reached a successful conclusion. SAW in itself was the pinnacle of our visual arts year, but that doesn’t mean we’re slowing down on every event, big or small.

Apart from the big-name headliners gracing our shores, there are literally dozens of events and experiences to Catch, from our bustling local theatre scene, to lesser known operas and everyday buskers. It’s just as well it’s a leap year because there is so much in store! Here’s what else you can expect from a bumper 2024:

JANUARY

Singapore Art Week

The marquis event of the visual arts calendar was packed with over 150 exhibitions.

Light To Night Festival

The National Gallery Singapore reimagined art with this big visual play in the heart of the Civic District. Beyond the magical light show, there were also workshops such as the Artsplaning series where you could learn more about visual arts.

Textures 2024

An event combining the best of visual arts, Light to Night Festival, and Singapore Literature? You just had to be there to find out how.

Coldplay

Worth a mention here because local music heroes Jasmine Sokko and RRILEY were the opening acts for the mega concert.

Huayi: Chinese Festival of Arts 2024

This festival is a vast mix of genres over more than 30 events held at the Esplanade ranging from Cantonese opera to hip hop performances and tattoo art workshops.

Chingay 2024

What’s Chinese New Year without a parade? This year’s will feature Singapore’s longest floor projection for a street parade, at a whopping 230m.

This is an engaging theatre series for children aged 3 to 6, with this month’s show, Fatimah and her Magic Socks, staged at the Esplanade Recital Studio.

Matilda the Musical

The other girl-power show you should catch is this much-loved musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel, to be staged at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre.

Formerly a festival that was a stalwart of the local dance scene, the event is now a series of five themed dance-focused weekends to Catch in the month of March.

Hamilton

You will not be throwing away your shot with this sung and rapped biographical super musical about one of the founding fathers of America - it runs at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre till June!

One of National Gallery Singapore’s key events since 2017, and something that seems to get bigger and better with every year. Just take a look at 2023’s version.

Art is a gentle calling, according to last year’s festival director Natalie Hennedige. It “is not about forcing something onto someone, but drawing others to you by being true to yourself”, she adds. And that’s enough to draw us to this year’s SIFA.
