5 things you shouldn't miss at Cultural Extravaganza 2024

Cultural Extravaganza’s back! Organised by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, this year’s programme promises to be bigger and better than ever. Starting on 8 May and concluding at the end of June 2024, the programme showcases the vibrant and distinctive SINGAPO人 culture through concerts, choral performances, and art exhibits.

Here are the top five events from Cultural Extravaganza that you shouldn’t miss!

1. Jazz It Up! A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2024

Some of us of a certain age bracket would get very excited that English and Cantonese vocal legend Teresa Carpio (杜丽莎) is part of this lineup including local crooners, Wysom Wong and Serene Koong. Together with our very own Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO), they'll lead a 'Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs' in Mandarin, English, and Cantonese.

Don’t miss the melodies of Jazz It Up! A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2024 running from 18 to 19 May 2024 at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium. Tickets are priced from $48.

2. The Pawned Wife

This lavish Teochew Opera is presented by our local Nam Hwa Opera company, with production team members from Shanghai and local Teochew opera talents. Based on a novel “The Enslaved Mother” and written by Luo Huaizhen, the opera about the tragic tale of a woman married into poverty is sure to tug at your heartstrings.

Experience the heart-wrenching tale of The Pawned Wife running from 9 to 12 May 2024 at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium. Tickets are priced from $10.

3. Treasures of Our Schools: From Cheong Soo Pieng to Lim Tze Peng

We were thrilled to find out that some of our national Nanyang Art treasures are actually on permanent display in some of our schools. Names synonymous with this art style, like Chen Wen Hsi, Liu Kang, and Chua Ek Kay will be featured in this exhibition, including artworks generously contributed by significant international artists like Liu Haisu.

4. A Choral Extravaganza

A first for Cultural Extravaganza, this series of concerts featuring five different choral groups: the Nanyang Hakka Federation Choir, Singapore Choral Artists, Chordinate Singers, Southern Arts Society, and the Vocal Consort, will reinterpret Chinese classics through the timeless artistry of choral singing.

5. Essentially Macbeth

Explore the existential crises faced by a group of ex-drama club members in this introspective musical produced as a collaboration between the NUS Chinese Drama club and NUS Chinese Orchestra. More than your usual theatre experience, Essentially Macbeth’s actors and musicians perform alongside each other pondering the meaning of fulfilment and purpose in the arts.
